ROBBIE LOVIG AND GLEN DOUGLAS: SAILORS

Robbie Lovig and Glen Douglas emerged in early 2002 as two of Australias hottest young sailing prospects in the tough world of Olympic class Tornado Catamaran racing.
The Melbourne teenagers caught the eye of seven-time Olympic coach Michael Fletcher late in 2001 with the coach of the Americas Cup winning Australia II crew immediately impressed with their potential, on-water prowess and dedication to both training and racing.
They are two of the brightest talents I have seen in Tornado racing in many, many years, Fletcher said. I have invited them onto the Olympic training squad as sparring partners for Olympic silver medallists and world champions Darren Bundock and John Forbes. The training and exposure they will get here will stand them in good stead for the 2008 Olympic Games in China which is one of their major goals.br>
Fletcher was particularly impressed with the pairs performance at the Sail Melbourne regatta on Port Phillip in January 2002 which doubled as the Australian Tornado Catamaran championships.
The pair were racing a Tornado for the first time and in all the races they completed finished second behind the world-class pairing of Bundock and Forbes.
Unfortunately equipment damage _ a broken mast _ prematurely ended their bid for a podium finish at the regatta.
Fletcher is confident Lovig and Douglas, despite their youth and inexperience in the class, have what it takes to be champions of the future.
This year the pair will contest numerous regattas in Australia as they complete their studies but plan to compete on the high-level European circuit from 2003 onwards.
Both have strong sailing backgrounds and good local support, are articulate, friendly and hard-working. There is little doubt, with coaching and sponsor support, Lovig andDouglas will be names etched on many sailing trophies in the future.
